PCNL vs RIRS: What's the Difference?
PCNL and RIRS are two procedural routes for kidney stones. Here is how they differ in access and typical use cases.

RIRS (Retrograde Intrarenal Surgery) reaches the kidney through the natural urinary passage using a flexible scope, often with laser stone fragmentation. PCNL (Percutaneous Nephrolithotomy) creates a small tract through the skin into the kidney and is typically considered for larger stone burdens.
Neither is universally “better.” Case selection matters: stone size and location, anatomy, prior surgeries, and surgeon expertise all influence the recommendation.
What to ask in consultation
Ask about expected stone-free rates for your stone, need for a temporary stent, hospital stay, and follow-up. Bring prior imaging if available so your urologist can advise more precisely.
